OUR MISSION STATEMENT

To grow and share our small Byzantine Catholic Community in both size and spiritual enrichment. St. Athanasius Byzantine Catholic Church proclaims an old faith, in fact the oldest Christian faith. However, this faith is deeply fulfilling and profoundly appropriate for the modern person. This faith will be shared with the entire community of central and southern Indiana by the fullness of our Churches’ liturgical services and its’ spirituality. This will be accomplished through community outreach offering religious education, classes on theology, spirituality, scripture studies, fundraising, Byzantine counseling with a focus on Scriptural healing of mind, body and soul.

STEWARDSHIP: Our Stewardship goal this year is $1,400.00. So far during this campaign we have received $450.00. The eparchy has agreed to return 100% of the surplus stewardship collection to the parishes. This means that anything donated in excess of the 1,400.00 will be returned to St. Athanasius. Please help us to exceed our goals, this will help St. Athanasius too! If you have not received stewardship forms, please call the office.

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS: THANK YOU TO ALL WHO WERE AVAILABLE TO ASSIST WITH CLEANING AND DECORATING! IT MIGHT NOT HAVE HAPPENED WITHOUT YOU.

HOUSE BLESSINGS: Will begin on January 7 and will continue each Monday throughout January. Please see the sign-up sheet in St. Mary’s Hall or if you have an E-mail address registered with the parish office, check your E-mail. Adult Education will be rescheduled after January. Because Father’s schedule is very busy and everyone is spread out over a large distance, please do what you can to try to be available on the evening he will be in your area. If it is impossible to be available on the specified date, please call the office. Father will be on a tight schedule, so he will bless the house, but does not anticipate having much time for the social customs. Please see the “traditions” for the Blessing of Homes.

ADULT EDUCATION: Is canceled for the month of January. House Blessings will take place instead, provided the weather cooperates.

ALL SOULS SATURDAYS: It takes quite a bit of time to coordinate the All Souls Book, so to assist the office, please get your All Souls in early. You may check the All Souls book to see that your loved ones are included and then let us know if any changes, corrections or amendments

are necessary. For new parishioners, the ancient traditions of the Catholic Church dictate that we dedicate five Liturgies for the beloved departed on five Saturdays starting January 26 and continuing through the Great Fast with the last one scheduled May 10. We remember the departed with these Liturgies, lighting candles for the departed at every Liturgy, dedicating six-day candles and other customs according to Liturgical Traditions and family needs. It is unfortunate in modern times that the departed are not as well remembered. This is a tradition that is important to continue. You want your children praying for your departed soul don’t you? Mark your calendar and try to attend as many All Souls as possible. They will be as follows:

BYZANTINE CHARISMATIC HEALING–THE PARAKLIS WILL REMAIN ON THE SECOND WEDNESDAY OF MOST MONTHS (EXCEPT FEB. MAR. AND AUG.) The focus of this group is to lead a Trinitarian life with the aid of the Holy Spirit on a daily basis. The Eastern Catholic Church from day one has been Charismatic and still is Charismatic. Modernism and Secularism have de-valued being Charismatic within the Catholic Church. It is a main stay within the Catholic Church. Charismatic brings the Spirit and the Trinity into our lives. It brings us and changes us from image to likeness of God. The main theme of the Byzantine Charismatic Group is to heal the spirit, soul, mind and body of all physical, mental and demonic afflictions. If you want to enjoy the gifts and the fruit of the Holy Spirit come to us for a community charismatic worship. The next Paraklis will be held on Tues., February 12, 2008 instead of the second Wednesday.

To pray for your kids
SALVATION. “Lord, let salvation spring up within my children, that they may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus, with eternal glory” (Is. 45:8, 2 Tim. 2:10)
GROWTH IN GRACE. “I pray that my children may grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ” (2Pet. 3:18)
LOVE. “Grant, Lord, that my children may learn to live a life of love, through the Spirit who dwells in them.” (Gasl. 5:25, Eph. 5:2)

BIBLICAL SELF-ESTEEM. “Help my children develop a strong self-esteem that is rooted in the realization that they are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus.” (Eph. 2:10).
FAITHFULNESS. “Let love and faithfulness never leave my children, but bind these twin virtues around their necks and write them on the tablet of their hearts” (Prov. 3:3).
COURAGE. “May my children always be strong and courageous in their character and in their actions” (Dt. 31:6).
PURITY. “Create in them a pure heart, O God, and let that purity of heart be shown in their actions” (Dt. 31:6).
KINDNESS. “Lord, may my children always try to b kind to each other and to everyone else.” (1 Thess. 5:15).
GENEROSITY. “Grant that my children may be generous and willing to share, and so lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age” (1Tim. 6:18-19

TO PREPARE FOR HOME BLESSING:
The purpose of House Blessing is to ask God to have mercy on the house, to rid it of every evil and to fill it with every blessing.
· On the table or family altar, place a lighted candle, a Theophany icon or icon of Christ, and Holy Water
· Make sure each room is well lit
· Turn OFF all TVs, stereos and computers
· Secure any pets that might jump or get underfoot.
· All family members should participate by joining in the litany responses and troparion.
· A member (or child) may lead the priest around the house with a lit candle.

Candles serve many different purposes and are very symbolic. Lighted Candles in the Church or during processions represent the Mystical Divine Presence or the True Light. In Baptism, lit candles are symbolic for our new spiritual life. The candles during the Gospel reading remind us that the teaching of Christ should enlighten us. Lighted candles for special intentions mean that our prayer should come from the heart burning as a candle with love for our Lord. We should remember that as long as a candle is lit, your prayers for that intention are ascending to God. A lit candle is a constant prayer. For example a six-day candle is a six-day prayer. Can you pray day and night for six days? LIBERTY AND LIFE LINES
Aging is an inevitable part of life, so many of us try to resign ourselves to accepting it with grace. The truth is, although growing older is unavoidable, many of the effects of aging are preventable. We do not have to become diabetics on insulin, have heart disease and dependent on blood thinners and statin drugs, develop cancer and suffer through chemotherapy or arthritis and live in pain. With the right and proper loving relationship with God, right diet, lifestyle, and hormonal and nutritional support, degenerative diseases and age-related health problems can be avoided or minimized. Keep in mind, it is important to eat the food that God gives us in the forms He allows it to grow. Eat the “fruit” of the plants in the most raw, organic, least processed form you can obtain them. If you are an omnivore, eat meat that comes from animals who eat free range plants (not grains). Remember, God created NATURE. The plants/herbs are part of nature, they have healing qualities. See Sirach 38.

There is a difference between chronological age (actual years on earth) and functional age. Functional age is an approximate measurement of aging based on how well the body is functioning. For example: Fr. Sid’s chronological age may be almost 80, but his approximate functional age may be that of a 29 year old. Right Father??? (Job preservation.)

Functional age experts have identified several biomarkers of aging by testing muscular strength, exercise tolerance, hearing, blood pressure, vital capacity (lung function), heart size and laboratory tests.

There are some quick and fun tests of functional age that your whole family will enjoy trying on Dr. Whitaker’s website. These tests measure Reaction Time, Visual Accommodation, Skin Elasticity, Static Balance, and Lung Function.
