HAIL MARY Hail Mary full of grace, the Lord is with You, JUSTIFICATION FOR MARY'S TITLE, MOTHER OF GOD... The Justification for Mary's Title as Mother of God can be found in Divine Revelation (Luke 1: 31-32) The text of the first prayer to Mary, Mother of God, is found in the ancient Greek Liturgy written by the Apostle St. James in Jerusalem, and the Liturgy composed by St. Mark, it reads as follows. Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with You. This original prayer written by St. James and St. Mark, is preserved
to this day by the Ambrosian Rite of Milan. ANGELIC SALUTATION Hail, Virgin Mother of God, full of grace, the Lord is
with You. BOHORODICE DJIVO Bojorodice Djivo radujsja, Blahodatnaja Marije, (Information in this article is taken from the "Byzantine
Leaflet Series" published by the Byzantine Seminary Press, Pittsburgh,
Pennsylvania.)
We fly to your patronage, O Virgin Mother of God. Despise not our prayers
in our necessities, but deliver us from all dangers, since You alone are
pure and blessed.
WE FLY TO YOUR PATRONAGE (Short History) The Prayer, We Fly To Your Patronage is the oldest Marian prayer used
equally in the East and in the West. Its origin, as that of so many Marian
prayers, disappears in antiquity. In 1917 in Egypt, a fragment of Greek
Papyrus containing the text of this prayer was found. This fragment proves
beyond any doubt that it was composed not later than the third century.
The third century with its persecution of Christians, and the dangers
they faced created a proper atmosphere for the faithful to show their
confidence in Mary’s motherly protection.
Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to Thy protection, implored Thy help or sought Thy intercession, was left unaided. Inspired with this confidence, I fly to thee, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother; to thee do I come, before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in Thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen PRAYER OF THE MIRACULOUS MEDAL "O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee" Amen. On November 27, 1830 our Blessed Mother appeared to Saint Catherine Laboure
and asked Saint Catherine to have a medal struck in the image which she
appeared to her during the apparition. Our Blessed Mother told St. Catherine
that people should wear it around their neck, and if they did this, there
would be special graces granted to them. The prayer which surrounds Our
Blessed Mother on the Medal is to be said daily with great devotion. Originally
called the Medal of the Immaculate Conception, the medal is now known
as the Miraculous Medal because of the large number of miracles attributed
to the wearing of it. PRAYER OF THE MIRACULOUS MEDAL - VERSION 2 O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to you,
PRAYER OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION O God, who by the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, didst prepare a worthy dwelling place for Thy Son, we beseech Thee that, as by the foreseen death of this, Thy Son, Thou didst preserve Her from all stain, so too Thou wouldst permit us, purified through Her intercession, to come unto Thee. Through the same Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, who livest and reignest with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end. Amen. Litany of LorettoLord have mercy on us. Lord have mercy on us.
THE SEVEN DOLORS (SORROWS) OF
MARY
THE SEVEN GRACES
(This Grace) I have obtained from my Divine Son, that those who propagate
this devotion to my tears and dolors, will be taken directly from this
earthly life to eternal happiness since all their sins will be forgiven
and my Son and I will be their eternal consolation and joy. V. The angel spoke God's message to Mary, R. and she conceived of the Holy Spirit. R. let it be done to me according to your word."
Lord, fill our hearts with your grace: once, through the message of an angel you revealed to us the incarnation of Your Son; now, through His suffering and death lead us to the glory of His resurrection. We ask this through Christ our Lord. R. Amen.
AKATHIST TO THE THEOTOKOS Celebrant: Blessed is our God, always, now and ever, and forever. R: Amen. Holy God, Holy and Mighty, Holy and Immortal, have mercy on us! (Three times) Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and forever. Amen. Most Holy Trinity, have mercy on us; Lord, cleanse us of our sins; O Master, forgive us our transgressions, Holy One, come to us and heal our infirmities for Your Name's sake! Lord, have mercy! (Three times) Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and forever. Amen. Our Father, Who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy Name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. C: For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, now and ever, and forever. R: Amen. Preamble The Celebrant recites or chants in recitardo fashion, all the following prayers. The people respond as indicated. As soon as the Angel had received his command, he hastened to Joseph's
house and said to the Ever-virgin: "Behold, heaven was brought down
to earth when the Word Himself was fully contained in you! Now that I
see Him in your womb, taking a servant's form, I cry out to you in wonder:
Hail, O Bride and Maiden Ever- pure!" Ikos 1 An Archangel was sent from heaven to greet the Mother of God, and as
he saw You assuming a body at the sound of his bodiless voice, O Lord,
he stood rapt in amazement and cried to her in these words: R: Hail, O Bride and Maiden ever-pure! Ikos 2 Knowing that she was a virgin, the Blessed One courageously answered the angel ''Your surprising words seem hard for my mind to accept: how can you speak of a birth that is to come from a conception without seed? And why do you cry, Alleluia?" R: Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Ikos 3 Trying to grasp the meaning of this mystery, the Virgin asked the holy messenger: "How is it possible that a son be born from a virginal womb? Tell me." And he answered her with awe, crying out in these words: Hail, O Hidden Sense of the ineffable plan; hail, O Belief in silence
that must be! Hail, O Bride and Maiden ever-pure! R: Hail, O Bride and Maiden ever-pure! Ikos 4 When the power of the Most High overshadowed the one who had never known the nuptial bed, her fruitful womb conceived, and she became for all a delicious field for those who wished to reap salvation by singing: Alleluia! R: Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Ikos 5 Pregnant with God, the Virgin hastened to Elizabeth, and her unborn child rejoiced, immediately knowing her embrace. Bouncing and singing, he cried out to the Mother of God: Hail, O Tendril whose Bud shall not wilt; hail, O Soil whose Fruit shall
not perish! R: Hail, O Bride and Maiden ever-pure! Ikos 6 Filled with a storm of contradictory thoughts, the wise Joseph was greatly disturbed; until then, he had seen you a virgin, and now he suspected you of secret guilt, all-blameless One! Learning that your conception was of the Holy Spirit, he cried out: Alleluia! R: Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Ikos 7 The shepherds heard the angels singing hymns of praise to the coming of Christ in the flesh. And running to Him as to a shepherd, they saw Him as a spotless Lamb grazing at Mary's breast. They sang a hymn to her and said: Hail, O Mother of lamb and shepherd; hail, O Fold of rational sheep! R: Hail, O Bride and Maiden ever-pure Ikos 8 When they saw the Star moved by God, the Magi followed its glittering light. Using it as a beacon, they found through it the Mighty King; and reaching the one beyond all reach, they rejoiced and cried out to Him: Alleluia! R: Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Ikos 9 The sons of Chaldea saw in the Virgin's hands the One whose hands had fashioned humanity: and acknowledging Him as the Master, although He bad taken the form of a servant, they hastened to honor Him with their gifts, and cried out to the Blessed One: Hail, O Mother of the Star Without Setting; hail, O Radiance of the mystical
day! Hail, O Bride and Maiden ever-pure! R: Hail, O Bride and Maiden ever-pure! Ikos 10 The Magi, having become God-bearing heralds, returned to Babylon, conforming to Your command, announcing You, the Christ, to all, and leaving Herod as a fool who did not know how to sing: Alleluia! R: Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Ikos 11 Illuminating Egypt with the light of truth, You cast away the darkness of error. For the idols, unable to stand Your might, fell down, and those who had been delivered from them cried out to the Mother of God: Hail, O Resurrection of Humankind; hail, O Downfall of the demons! Hail, O Bride and Maiden ever-pure! R: Hail, O Bride and Maiden ever-pure! Ikos 12 As Simeon was about to leave the present deceitful world, You were entrusted to him as an infant, but you made Yourself known to him as the Perfect God. Wherefore, he marveled at Your wisdom beyond words, and cried out: Alleluia! R: Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Ikos 13 The Creator displayed a new creation to us who had come from Him: He came forth from a womb that had received no seed, and He left it intact as it had been, so that at the sight of this marvel, we would sing to her and cry out: Hail, O Blossom of incorruption; hail, O Crown of self-mastery! R: Hail, O Bride and Maiden ever-pure! Ikos 14 Now that we have seen this strange birth, let us estrange ourselves from the world and turn our minds to heaven: indeed, it is for this that the God Most High appeared on earth as a lowly man, desiring to draw up to heaven those who cry out to Him: Alleluia! R: Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Ikos 15 While fully present amid those below, The Uncircumscribed Word was in no way absent from those above: for what happened was a divine condescension, and not a moving from one place to another; and it was a birth from a Virgin inspired by God, who heard these words: Hail, O Space of the spaceless God; hail, O Gate of the Sublime Mystery! R: Hail, O Bride and Maiden ever-pure! Ikos 16 The whole order of the Angels marveled at the great work of Your becoming human: for they saw the One inaccessible as God become a human, accessible to all, living with us and hearing all cry out: Alleluia! R: Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Ikos 17 O Mother of God, we see the best of speakers become as mute as fish in your regard, for they could not explain how you could give birth while remaining a virgin. As for us, while marveling at the mystery, we cry out to you with faith: Hail, O Container of God's Wisdom; hail, O Treasury of his Providence! R: Hail, O Bride and Maiden ever-pure! Ikos 18 Desiring the save the world the Creator of All came down to the world of his own will. Being at the same time our Shepherd and our God, He appeared among us, a human like us. And so the like called upon the like, and as God He heard: Alleluia! R: Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Ikos 19 O Virgin Mother of God, you are the Strength of Virgins and of all those
who have recourse to you. For the Maker of heaven and earth covered you
with his shadow, O Pure One, and came to dwell in your womb, and taught
us all to cry out to you: R: Hail, O Bride and Maiden ever-pure! Ikos 20 Every hymn falls short when it attempts to sing the multitude of Your mercies: we could sing to You as many songs as there are grains of sand, O Holy King without ever doing anything worthy of what You have given to those who cry out to You: Alleluia! R: Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Ikos 21
We see the holy Virgin as a brilliant luminary enlightening those who live in darkness; for having kindled the Immaterial Light, she leads all to the knowledge of God and fills their minds with radiance, so that she is worthily praised in these words : Hail, O Beam of the mystical sun; hail, O Radiance of the light without
setting! Hail, you who traced the living model of the pool; hail, O you who erased
the stain of sin! R: Hail, O Bride and Maiden ever-pure! Ikos 22 Because He wished to grant release from all the ancient debts, the One who pays our dues came down Himself to those who had spurned His grace; He tore up their obligations, and heard from all of them this cry: Alleluia! R: Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Ikos 23 By singing praise to your maternity, we all exalt you as a Spiritual Temple, O Mother of God; For the One Who dwelt within your womb, the Lord who holds all things in His hands, sanctified you, glorified you and taught all to sing to you: Hail O Tabernacle of God the Word; hail, Holy One, more holy than the
saints! Ikos 24
O Mother worthy of all praise, you who have given birth to the Word, the holiest of the holy, accept this present offering, deliver us from every affliction and save from the future punishment those who cry out to you: Alleluia! R: Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Gabriel was rapt in amazement as he beheld your virginity and the splendor of your purity, O Mother of God, and he cried out to you: "By what name shall I call you? I am bewildered; I am lost, I shall greet you as I was commanded to do: Hail, O Woman full of Grace!" Dismissal
P: Glory be to You, O Christ, our God, Our hope, glory be to You! R: Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit now
and ever, and forever. Amen. P: May Christ our true God have mercy on us and save us through the prayers of his most pure Mother and of the holy glorious and illustrious Apostles, through the prayers of all the Saints; for He is gracious and loves mankind. R: Amen!
PRAYER TO THE MOTHER OF GOD - BY THE MONK PAUL O chaste and spotless Virgin! O Lady never touched by blame, corruption,
or defilement! O Bride of Christ! You gave birth to the Word of God in
a glorious and mysterious way, uniting Him to mankind and linking our
apostate nature to the divine. You are the only hope, the prompt help
of every Christian who seeks your refuge. Though I have often defiled
myself with all sorts of impurities - words, deeds, or thoughts - though
slothfulness has enslaved me to lust, though I often find myself weighed
down by despair and depression, do not despise me. Rather, since you are
the Mother of God and full of love for us, in your compassion pity me,
prodigal sinner that I am, and accept this prayer which I offer to you
with these impure lips. With boldness that only a mother could manifest,
beg your Son, our Lord and Master, to open to me His deep and tender loving
mercy. Entreat Him to disregard my numberless sins. Ask Him to lead me
to repentance, so that I may become His friend and follower, always conscious
of His commandments and ready to observe them. In your compassion, stay
with me always, you who are so tender of heart! In this life, ever intercede
for me fervently, ever be at my side to repel the onslaughts of my enemies,
ever ready to lead me to salvation. At the moment of my death, embrace
my sorry soul, and drive off the sinister forms of the evil spirits. On
that awesome day of judgment, rescue me from eternal torment, and reveal
me as an heir of that indescribable glory of your Son. O my Lady, O holy
Mother of God! May I deserve this through your intercession and mediation,
through the grace and love for mankind of your holy Son, +our Lord, God,
and Savior, Jesus Christ, who deserves all glory, honor and worship, with
His eternal Father, and His all-holy Spirit, now and ever, and forever.
Amen. ACT OF CONSECRATION I, (name), a faithless sinner- renew and ratify today in Thy hands, O
Immaculate Mother, the vows of my Baptism: I renounce forever Satan, his
pomps and works; and I give myself entirely to Jesus Christ, the Incarnate
Wisdom, to carry my cross after Him all the days of my life, and to be
more faithful to Him than I have ever been before. Act of
Consecration to Mary, Virgin and O Mary, Virgin and Most Powerful Mother of Mercy, Queen of Heaven and
Refuge of sinners, we consecrate ourselves today to thine Immaculate Heart.
We consecrate to thee our very being and our whole life, all that we have,
all that we love, all that we are. To thee we give our bodies, our hearts
and souls. To thee we give our homes, our families and our country.
Queen of the Rosary, sweet Virgin of Fatima, who has deigned to appear in the land of Portugal and has brought peace, both interior and exterior, to that once so troubled country, we beg of thee to watch over our dear homeland, and to assure its moral and spiritual revival. Bring back peace to all nations of the world, so that all, and our own nation in particular, may be happy to call thee their Queen and the Queen of Peace.
Prayer to Our Lady of Perpetual Help Behold, O Mother of Perpetual Help, at thy feet a wretched sinner, who has recourse to thee and trusts in thee. O Mother of mercy, have pity on me; I hear all men call thee the refuge and hope of sinners: be therefore my refuge and my hope. Help me for the love of Jesus Christ: hold out thy hand to a fallen wretch, who commends himself to thee and dedicates himself to be thy servant forever. I praise and thank God, who of His great mercy hath given me this confidence in thee, a sure pledge of my eternal salvation. Alas, it is only too true that in the past I have fallen miserably, because I did not come to thee. I know that with thy help I shall conquer; I know that thou wilt help me, if I commend myself to thee; but I am fearful lest in the occasions of sin I shall forget to call upon thee and so I shall be lost. This grace, then, do I ask of thee; for this I implore thee, as much as I can and know how to do; namely, that in the assaults of hell I may ever run to thy protection and may say to thee: Mary, help me; Mother of Perpetual Help, permit me not to lose my God. Hail Mary full of grace, the Lord is with You, blessed art Thou among women and blessed is the Fruit of Thy Womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen. O Mother of Perpetual Help, grant me ever to be able to call upon thy powerful name, since thy name is the help of the living and the salvation of the dying. Ah, Mary most pure, Mary most sweet, grant that thy name from this day forth may be to me the very breath of life. Dear Lady, delay not to come to my assistance whenever I call upon thee; for in all the temptations that assail me, in all the necessities that befall me, I will never leave off calling upon thee, ever repeating: Mary, Mary. What comfort, what sweetness, what confidence, what tenderness fills my soul at the sound of thy name, at the very thought of thee! I give thanks to our Lord, who for my sake hath given thee a name so sweet, so lovable, so mighty. But I am not content merely to speak thy name; I would utter it for very love of thee; it is my desire that love should ever remind me to name thee, Mother of Perpetual Help. Hail Mary full of grace, the Lord is with You, blessed art Thou among women and blessed is the Fruit of Thy Womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen. O Mother of Perpetual Help, thou art the dispenser of every grace that God grants us in our misery; it is for this cause that He hath made thee so powerful, so rich, so kind, that thou mightest assist us in our miseries. Thou art the advocate of the most wretched and abandoned sinners, if they but come unto thee; come once more to my assistance, for I commend myself to thee. In thy hands I place my eternal salvation; to thee I entrust my soul. Enroll me among thy most faithful servants; take me under thy protection and it is enough for me: yes, for if thou protect me, I shall fear nothing; not my sins, for thou wilt obtain for me their pardon and remission; not the evil spirits, for thou art mightier than all the powers of hell; not even Jesus, my Judge, for He is appeased by a single prayer from thee. I fear only that through my own negligence I may forget to recommend myself to thee and so I shall be lost. My dear Lady, obtain for me the forgiveness of my sins, love for Jesus, final perseverance and the grace to have recourse to thee at all times, O Mother of Perpetual Help. Hail Mary full of grace, the Lord is with You, blessed art Thou among women and blessed is the Fruit of Thy Womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen.
Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy. my life, my sweetness
and my hope! To you do we cry, poor banished children of Eve! To you do
we send up our sighs; mourning and weeping in this vale of tears! Turn
then, O most gracious Advocate, your eyes of mercy toward us, and after
this, our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of your womb, Jesus Christ!
